Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a form of integrated medicine used to promote
wellness and good health. The program is a scientifically validated
approach complementing the medical management of chronic pain and
stress-related disorders and is in use at more than 200 hospitals
and medical centers.
Mindfulness-Based Cancer Care builds on the MBSR program. A diagnosis of cancer and cancer treatments can create their own stresses. In addition, there often are a myriad of treatment choices and opinions available. Making these choices using mindfulness techniques can bring clarity to difficult decision making process. At the heart of the MBCC course is the MBSR program, however each class has exercises and meditations tailored for the cancer patient and/or loved ones.
Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been found to have significant success in treating mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Previous studies have shown that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has a higher response and lower relapse rate when combined with pharmacotherapy, than when using only traditional antidepressant medications such as Prozac and other selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) by themselves. Practicing mindfulness has been shown to stimulate both neurogenesis and increased synaptic connections in the parts of the brain associated with regulating ADD/ADHD, depression and anxiety, thus enhancing the benefit of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.
